Early Cherries & Strawberries At least a fortnight later than usual, the first cherries and strawberries of the season were despatched to the markets from Clyde this morning. The cherries were grown by Messrs J Hanning, J. Bain, K. N. Paulin (Clyde) and Eric Holmes (Waenga). The strawberries were grown by Mr C. Waldron (Clyde). Shearing, which is now fairly general throughout CentralOtago will commence at Earnscleugh Station to-morrow. We understand that the season for rabbits at the Freezing Works at Alexandra will close on Thursday, Nov. 23rd. \ If a census is taken in New Zealand next year it is believed that New Plymouth will qualify as a city. . r Emolument of £BOO, plus cost-of-living bonus, is being offered for the vacant post of gensral secretary to the Public Service Association. A notable feature of the adult members of the Polish refugees that have arrived in New Zea land is the number who have solid gold teeth in their mouths. The ‘Observer’ says that it is understood that last week’s Federation of Labour conference held a pistol to the Government on the question of clothing prices especially in respect of childrens clothing Further subsidies from the War Expenses Account were at once mooted. The new sugar and tea coupons Nos 1, 2, 3 and 4 will be negotiable from October 30th to November 26th. The value of each is 2oz for tea and 12oz for sugar. Butter coupons Nos 3 and 4 each for Boz will be valid until Novem her 26th. Meat coupons No. 3 will be negotiable until the 26th inst. also. A Press fmessage of 25 years ago said ; “Australians are growling because the Peace Conference gave them , no chance of recovering the millions expended over the war. New Zealafid is in the same position because our representa tive did not battle for a refund. If the Huns had won we should have paid them in full for the great outlays.”
