There were many supporters of the Alexandra team who fondly hoped that their team could defeat Matakanui on Saturday, but the result showed that their faith in the Greens was not justified. As a matter of fact the visitors won decisively by 18 points to 8. The ground was frozen and somewhat treacherous, wnile conditions overhead were good. In the first spell Matak. scored y points (a try by Hanrahan ..converted by F. Donnelly and a potted goal by Tom (Houston). In the second half Matak. added 9 points, two tries by Les Boyd and a penalty by F, Donnelly. Alexandra’s 8 points were a try bv Arnott converted by Thompson, and a penalty goal by Thompson. Mr Cox was a good referee. The fact that Cromwell beat Wanaka on Saturday (by Gto 3) robs the Vincent competition of much of the interest as in ccdsequencc Matakanui are again sure winners. The following are the fixtures for the second round: — A GRADE. July 18th. Wanaka to Matakanui, Mr Uyan. Alexandra to Clyde, Mr Cox. Cromwell a bye. B GRADE.
