MINING

It has been suggested to us, that a solution of the problem to work the bed of the Kawarau River, has been found by the party that is operating a small plant successfully on the Manuherikia River, above the bridge at Galloway. We understand that the whole contrivance is a very cheap one, consisting of a boat and an engine, with grab hooks and buckets. Similar machines were used for clearing the beds of streams in Southland, and it was from these that the idea of winning gold sprang. Ihe party in the Manuherikia are doing quite well, winning 13 and 14 ounces per week.
