When, fifty years later, he lay dying—a millionaire and the financial dictator of Europe—he isummoned his five sons to his bedside, and, with much good counsel, urged on them that they should conduct the great business he had built up in partnership, trusting each other, and working i?i harmony for the expansion of the family fortunes. Of the five sons, Anselm remained at Frankfort, Solomon made his headquarters at Vienna, Nathan in England, Charles at Naples, and .Tamos at Paris. In 1815 the Emperor Francis of Austria ennobled all the five brothers, in recognition of their groat financial services; seven years J a ter each of them was made a baron. Their wealth grow by leaps and bounds: they wore the bankers of Europe and the arbiters of national destinies.
