CROMWELL

(From our own correspondent.) As the river is falling fast, all the Gorge dredges should be in active operation soon- The weather to-day is cold and blustery and snow is falling low down on Mt, Pisa range. Shine 1 continues her rich returns. The start of lifting Shine 2 will not take place till about next Thursday as it is found that the spot the pump was to be placed was unsuitable. The overhaul of the Rising Sun should be finished this week, and she will be in splendid order, the ladder is now virtually a new one and weighs three tons more than formerly. As the river is falling and the Golden Sun is able to work towards the deep ground her returns imprmed last week. I think that considering the smallness of the capital this company will pay handsomely. Messrs Talhoys, Sampson Junr., and Jas. Sligo were here this week inspecting the Punt Dredge and claim with a view of giving it another trial. Considerable activity prevails on the Garrick Range where Mr lies supervises some thirty men. As soon as the Cyanide tanks, being manufactured by the Central Otago Foundry at Alexandra, arrive ,a good few more men will be employed. The deep level tunnel at Bendigo is being vigorously pushed on. 1 hear that a payable leader has been struck lately. There is no knowing what rich discoveries may he made in driving this tunnel to its termination.

Sluicers at the Nevis will now start to wash up before the hard frosts interefere with them.

Mr J. Marslin, the new manager of the Luggatc Hydraulic Co., is now cleaning up a small paddock. He is clear of the hard day bottom and the wash lays on a soft reef one.

A SALUTORV LESSON. On Saturday, a young man named Henry Norman was charged before Mr Hascldcn, S.M., with using obscene language in the recreation ground before several school children. The accused pleaded guilty, and after hearing evidence and perusing the objectionable language used, the Magistrate fined Norman L 5, to be paid on or before Wednesday, in default twelve months’ imprisonment.

DATE OF MONTHLY COURT,

Considerable dissatisfaction is felt throughout the Cromwell district by the sudden changes made in the dales of the monthly Court held here by Mr Haselden. Formerly, and for many years, it was held on Thursday, and Friday should there be sufficient business for the second day, and on the second Thursday of the month. Last month it was held on Friday, this month on Saturday, and 1 presume next month some other day. Several cases were adjourned to next Court day, through there being no time to finish them this sitting.
