CLYDE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Council w.'S hold in the Council Chambers, on Tuesday evening last, the 6th inst. Present—B. Naylor, Esq,, Mayor, in the chair, and Councillors Auckland, Welsford, Beck, and Cox. The minutes of last meeting were read and received. The inward correspondence including the following letters were road and received from Mr Alex. Willis (for Resident Minister) to the effect that there Were no funds available for road to Butcher’s Guily ; from Bank of New South Wales, extending time of payment of overdraft on account of Bridge ; from Colonial Secretary re payment of Borough Revenues into Bank ; from Messrs Welsford, Cox, Holden, and Williams, asking that the Council do construct a water race so that the water from the Wia Puna Creek be available for their use and that of other ratepayers; from Messrs Strode and Fraser, Earusoleugh Station, offering the lump sum of L3O per annum for the privilege of crossing the Clyde Bridge. The outward correspondence was read and approved. The Mayor said that ho had caused a letter to be written to the Colonial Secretary re payment of revenue into Bank. The Tovn Clerk was instructed to acknowleige receipt of letter from the Bank of New South Wales expressing the thanks of this Council for getting a further extension of time for payment of overdraft on account of Bridge. In consideration • of application from Messrs Williams and others for the construction of a water race, the Mayor said, he could not see how the request could be acceded to, as the whole of the water from the Wia Puna Creek was already let, and ■further, he said he did not think if a race was constructed that it would be of any service, still further, the water was already let to Mr Oliver and the Hospital Committee, Mr Feraud was also using it, and he did not see how it could be taken away from either. Cr Welsford said he must support the application, as it was a work that should have been done years since. The water race was purchased with the ratepayers money, and he thought they should receive some benefit from it. It appeared to him that parties living outside the town were receiving more consideration at the hands of the Council than were the ratepayers, which was manifestly unfair and unjust. Had the water purchased by'the town have been conveyed in a race at a good elevation on the terrace, i years ago, great improvements would have been made to the benefit of all ; it was not too late now to do it, and he would not be satisfied till it was done. Crs Beck and Cox agreed with the former speaker. After considerable discussion it was decided to postpone the further consideration of the question till it was decided whether the Borough would ha merged into th» County. Cr Welsford said it was not his intention I to let the matter lapse, so he would table a Notice of Motion—That at the next meeting of the Council the letter from Messrs Williams and others be again considered. The letter from Messrs Strode and Fraser was ordered to lay over till the next meeting of the Council. The Public Works Committee were an'thorizsd to expand the sum of thirty shillings in the repair of the Wai 'Puna water race. The question of merging into the County was now brought up. The Mayor said that a meeting of the County Council is to be held on Monday, the 12th inst., 'to which this Council is invited to attend to submit proposal of terms on which they would be willing to merge into the County, After discussion it was resolved—That the Town Clerk prepare a statement of the assets and liabilit : es of the Borough ; and that a special meeting of the Council he held on Friday evening, the 9th inst., to consider such statement, and to draw up proposals to submit to the County Council at the meeting of the 12th inst. Resolved—That the Town Clerk write to Messrs M'Nally and Co., proprietors of the Golden Gate Water Race, re refit of water from the Wai Ken Keri Creek. A vote of thanks to the chair terminated the proceedings.
