KENNEL AND POULTRY CLUB.

Annual Show.

The third annual show cf the Hawke's Bay Kennel and Poultry Club, which opened in the Garrison Hall this afternoon, is undoubtedly the ticest exhibition of its kind ever locally held, and ore which would do more than credit to any of the larger centres of population. It is true that though its years are few the Olub is imbued with vigorous strength and energetic vitality, but even taking these facts info consideration the success with which their efforts have been attended exceeds all expectations, and probably surprises even those who most desired, and worked most arduously to secure, results that should be in every .way satisfactory. The vast accommodation afforded by the drill-shed is by no means too great for the dogs, poultiy, and pigeons exhibited, in fact space could b.3.V3 been found for but few entries more, and the quality in practically every class is well up to, when not above, the ordinary show standard. It will be understood that, with so many exhibits to effectively display, the work of arrangement and classification was necessarily a long and arduous one, but the committee have been fqual to the occasion, and visitors to the show will find that every facility is afforded them of critically inspecting each aad all of thepens. As already stated the show is a credit to the district and ths colony, an the club are to be congratulated on the progressive spirit they have shown and the brilliant triumph they have achieve . The entries this year in dogs ana poultry number nearly double those of last year, as the following figures will show: — 1899. 1900. Dogs 124 205 Poultry 165 345 289 550 In dogs, the greatest increases ars in collies and fox terriers the former having gone up from 43 to 73, and the latter from 18 to 4f. an addition of exactly 30 in each class. _n the other canine divisions there are also increases, but not of so marked a nt ure. The poultry classes show most improvement in Indian Games, Minor;as, Leghorns, Wyandottes, Orpingtons, and Andalusians, but the other breeds well maintain the reputation they formerly established. The pigeon classes are also strongly represented, considerable impetus having been given to the breeding and rearing of these birds by the formation of the local Homing Pigeon Society. This section of the show, though not so large, compares favorably with the others in point of merit, and will attract the admiring attention of all who take an interest in the pigeon tribe. Thejudgingwasstartedatan early hour this morning and after the usual preliminary difficulties had been overcome the work proceeded with commendable expedition. The awards met with general approval, and the judges, whose names are given below, must be complimented on the thoroughness with which they periormed their onerous and exacting duties. The official opening of the show took -place at 2 p.m., his Worship the Mayor <Mr G. H. Swan) performing the ceremony. During the afternoon the, hall was visited by a large number of the public, all of whom were loud in their expressions of commendation, and unanimous in their verdict of approval. This evening the city band will add to the attractions of the show by playing a well-selected programme of music, and doubtles-. the attendance will tax the uttermost capacity of the large building.
