HASTINGS.
[OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
The discussion on Mr J. N. Williams's motion at the Borough Council meeting last Thursday night as to taking over two drains had a distinctly old world flavor about it —at least so far as Hastings at any period could be considered ancient. He said that but for Mr T. Tanner and Himself, Hastings, or the greater part of it, would be a swamp till this day. He said that the drainage system made by Mr Tanner was a perfect system, and it never should have been interfered with. The Frimley and Mahora drains had been cut by himself. He said it had been stated that the assumption of the drains in question would involve the Council in great expense, but he (Cr. Williams) wished to state that had the Council attended to the matter at the proper time ifc would not have cost more than £5. The Mayor strongly opposed the motion, believing that it would cost the ratepayers hundreds of pounds. However, he was the only dissentient.
