ALLEGED DEFALCATIONS.

Two Bank Officers

Arrested.

Christchuroh, Last nighc. This morning Alexander Y. Hay and William Allan, manager and teller respectively of the Biiik of New Zealand, Rangiora, were arrested on a charge of having stolen from the bank vanoua sums, amounting to £4732 183 81. The accused, who had been suspected for a fortnight, and were prepart-d for the charges, were brought immedia'ely before Justices of the Peace. Alexander Young Hay was charged that he did on January 29th, 1894, at Rangioia, steal the sum of £80 5s 2d, and on February 26th, 1900, the sum of £68 15s. He was also jointly charged with William Allan, teller, with having j on divers dates between January Ist, 1894, and July lOth, 1900, .stolen various sums, amounting in the whole to £4583 18s 6d. ; Mr Fisher, who appeared for the prosecuting bank, applied for a remaud until 9 a.m. on Tuesday next. Mr Helmore, who appeared for W. Allan and represented Mr Harper, counsel for A. Y. Ha.}', had no objt-etion to offer, and aslceu for bail, which was fixed on thefitst two charges oa accused's own recognisances £150 and two sureties of £100 each, and ou the main charge on the two accused's recognisances of £1000 each and two sureties of £500 each. The total amount of bail was £4350, and the sureties were immediately forthcoming.
