RETURN OF INVALIDS
Another Batch Arrive Unexpectedly.
(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION) Dunedin, This day.
The Papanui, with another detachment of invalided soldiers, turned up unexpectedly at Port Chalmers yesterday. They ’are Canavan (Marlborough), Heather (Auckland), Lindsay (Timaru), Vernon (New South Wales Lancers), Saunders ('outhland), Saunders (Christchurch), and Mills (New South Wales Mounted Rifles). They met with an enthusiastic reception at the port from the Mayor and Borough Councillors, who entertained them at lunch. The men reached town in the afternoon, where they were met by the organising committee, who entertained them at the Grand Hotel. They leave for the north by steamer this morning. Lieutenant Canavan paid a high compliment to Dr. Tomburns for the splendid treatment the New -Zealanders had received at his hands ; his courageous act at Kleinfontein in rescuing a Life Guardsman under fire had not received the commendation such a plucky act deserved. Saunders said he was responsible for the statements re hospital management that appeared in the Cape Argus. In consequence he believed he would have to go to England to give evidence. Lieutenant Canavan added that Troopers Milehell and Orbell, both of Otago, had now recovered and were re urniug by the Matamea.
