Thp cavalry and mounted infantry under Major-General lan Hamilton, Lieutenant - General French, and Major-General Hickman are forcing the Boers under Commandant Botha eastward from Pretoria and towards Middleburg.

General Buller in the meanwhile is advancing to the north-west from Standerton. When the picket of twenty-five men of the Yorkshire Regiment were surprised by the Boers near Lindley they fought till only six of the number remained able to offer any defence. This half dozen men, with their bayonets alone, held the enemy at bay until the arrival of reinforcements relieved the defenders.
