The Manchester February Steepleohase meeting might fitly have been headed " for Mr Linde's benefit," for the genial owner of Jiyrefield Lodge had it pretty much hie own way at New Barns recently, and hia frienda must have re-oroesed the Channel with pockets full of monjy and hearts full of elation when the meeting terminated (says the Sporting Times). Five races went to -> iyrefield, and as another event also went to an Irish trained horse, the Irish division had good cause to rejoice. On the opening day M«reachal scored an easy viotory over a useful field in ihe County Handicap Hurdle Race. But easily as Maresohal had won the Hurdle Race, his stable-companion, Meroury, won the Manchester Handioap Steeplechase in much hollo wer fashion, for he made the whole of the running and won in a oanttr by fifty lengthi. An English writer says that good news comes from Kingsclere with regard to Orice, who is reported to have wintered in the most satisfactory way and to have grown into a magnificent horse. The faot of hie having been withdrawn from the City and Suburban, in which he was by no means overburdened, his 9at 71b notwithstanding, points to the conclusion that the Duke of Westminster will not have him trained for handicaps, but keep him exclusively for his more important and classio engagements, such as those at Ascot and the Eclipse Stakes at Bandown, which splendid prize he won last year after his memorable illness.
