The benefit entertainment whioh it is in-, tended to give Mrs Sheath _ has been fixed to take place on the evening of the 9th November. It will be urder the patronage of the Hawke's Bay Caledonian Society. '
It is intended to hold a vocal and instrumental entertainment on the 15th October, in the Marist Brothers' schoolroom, for the purpose of raising funds to erect a shelter shed on the school grounds. A good programme is being arranged in connection with the gathering.
Our Hastings correspondent wired as follows this afternoon : —" Captain Russell has wired to a Hastings resident to-day to say that Mr Seddon promised him some days ago to place a vote for the Hastings Courthouse on the Supplementary Estimates."
The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (limited) have received the following cablegram from their London office, dated 18th inst.:—" Tallow.—There is a rather better demand. Fine mutton; tallow is worth 27s 3d, good beef 25s 9d, : and edible beef 27s 6d per cwt. Frozen Meat.—The mutton market is firmer. Canterbury mutton is. worth. 4-J-d per lb. The lamb" market is unchanged, but the' beef market is quiet. New Zealand beef, fore-quarters, is worth 2§d per lb. Other' quotations are unchanged."
A meeting of the Danevirke Licensing Committee was held on Saturday, all the members being present. The clerk reported that he had served a notice on Mrs Allardice, to the effect that she could not hold the license, as her husband resided in the house. Mr Bamford appeared for the licensee, and said that by a clause in the lease Mr Allardice was allowed the right of remaining in the house as a boarder, but a fresh : lease would be made out. The matter was held over till next meeting.
A civil case, R. O'Rorke, of Meanee, v. J. Carriek, of Hastings, claim £20 15s was heard at Court to-day, and occupied considerable time. The action was in connection with a horse offered for sala at Hastings, guaranteed staunch and sound, by Carriek, and bought by O'Rorke, who claimed after a trial that it was not what it had been represented to be. Mr Sainsbury appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr Cornfordfor the defendant. A great many witnesses were called on each side. Judgment was given for amount claimed, with costs £2 18s, witnesses' expenses £4 3s 3d, sjlicitor's fee £2 2s.
