Waipawa.

(own coebespondent.)

The Town Board held a special meeting On Saturday night, for the purpose of dealing with the resignation of the Road Over- "■"" 3£er, Inspector of Nuisances, &c, Mr H. Percy Mr Peroy had been suspended by tho chairman, and subsequently sent in his resignation. The letter was read, giving one month's notice, in accordance with the agreement, and the resignation was accepted. The Chairman (Mr A.E. Jull) suggested that before appointing a successor to Mr I ercy the Board should go into the financial aspects of the various offices to be filled. He was of opinion that a more economical arrangement could be arrived at. Under s the present Bystem it cost tho Board £250 a year for labor and road maintenance. The system adopted by the Waipawa County Council of maintaining their roads by yearly contract waß working well, and there was no Reason why the Board should not do the v/saine. Mr McDougall supported this view, bat Messrs Collett.'Bibby, and McGrcevy did not consider that the present arrangement could be improved on—provided a good man was employed. It was finally decided to advertise for applications for the position of surfaceman, &o. The American Minstrels played Friday and Saturday here to fair houses, and were xnucmappreciated. The acrobatic business of the Connor Brothers is vory clever. The entertainment concluded with the usual uproarious farce, which, of course, created plenty of fun. , The social to Mr A. Mackay, of Onga Onga, on the eve of his departure for Taranaki, came off last Saturday night, about thirty gentlemen being present. Owing partly to business engagements, and the threatening state of the weather, a number from Waipawa were unable to attend The Public Hall, in which the gathering took place, was nicely decorated, and the table co_tained a tempting display of all the (seasonable luxuries, laid out in Mr Stone's

best style. After the oompany had partaken of solid refreshments, the chairman (Mr J. G. Macfarlaue) called on those present to drink the health of the guest of the evening, Mr &.. Mackay, which was done in an enthusiastic manner. An illuminated address was then read, signed by Mr Mackay's friends, wishing him God speed to his new home. Mr Mackay briefly responded, and thanked the company for the honor done him. He expressed regret at parting with old friends. Other toasts followed— "Onga Onga Racing Club," "Farming Industry," "House of Representatives," "Host"and Hostess," "The Chairman," and "The Queen." The following gentlemen contributed songs during the evening : —Messrs H. Johnson, J. Stone, Carver, Hastie, J. and W. McLeod, and Milne. The company dispersed about 11.30, after the usual vote of thanks to the chair.

The Onga Onga Race Club met on Saturday, at 7.30, when the secretary submitted a draft of the programme for the 29th December next, which was duly adopted, and ordered to be printed and a copy forwarded to the Metropolitan Club for approval. The programme consists of: —Handicap Hurdle Race, 30 soys ; Hack Handicap, 30 soys ; Onga Onga Handicap (open), 60 soys; Maiden Flat, 15 soys; Onga Onga Cup, 15 soys; Flying Handioap (open), 25 soys; Hack Flying Handicap, 12 soys. The secretary "was instructed to forward a letter of sympathy to Mrs Moran, accompanied by a cheque for £3 3s. •
