To tho Editor : Sir, —What is a Scotch barrister ? Is it a Writer to the Signet, or a Converted Deist'? I only ask for information. I am, &c, Not a Scotch Bakrister. [There is no such name as barrister known in Scotland, but a man may bo a Scotchman and a practising barrister in England or the colonies, and yet not ho a converted Deist.—Ed. D.T.]

From Mr Crerar we havo received a new penholder whioh for the young learner should prove invaluable, for iv taking his lesions iv writing he must hold tho pen properly. We have received from the same source "samples of Hewitt's patent ball pointed pens, one of which writes a letter with one dip. Having used tho puns for gome time, wo can heartily commend thorn to our readers.

During this last week (c .ys the Wairoa Guardian of Saturday) two largo mobs of sheep passed tho Wairoa ferry, one of 2500 fat sheep under the charge of Mr Wm. At an extraordinary general meeting of shareholders of tho Colonial Insurance Company tho resolutions proposed by tho directors recommending the sale of the company's business to tbe Commercial Union Assuranco Society of London, wore adopted with only ono dissentient. It urges that a warrant should be issued for the arrest of the Colonial Treasurer and tho Native Minister on a charge of keeping buck the rents of tho Rotorua township. Tho Auckland Herald understands that most of tho owner's interests iv tho Rotorua township have been purchased, and any claim for back rents thus extinguished.

A cheap edition of tho lato Dr. Norman McLeod's Scotch story "Tho Starling" has been published, and we aro indebted to Mr Crerar for a copy. Tho tale is worth a careful perusal, especially by thoso given to Sabbatarianism. Dr MoLeod, it. will bo remembered, was onco himself in '.rouble over tho decalogue, and many vow in New Zealand must still romomber tho gifted preucher's lectures to working men on Sunday evenings, when only thoso wearing bluck coats were refused admission to tho church.

Tho shareholders of tho Equitablo Insurance Association resumed their meeting at Dunedin last night. After a long discussion tho lesolution as amended was carried. Mr Bevan lodged a protest to the effect that the resolution was not log.il, and he threatened to bring the matter before tho law courts. Our Gisborne correspondent wires a. follows : —"The Louden Bellringors and the Faust family opened at the Theatre Jtoyal on Saturday evening. There wits a crowded uudieueo, which was sout away delighted. The entertainment was the most pleasing held in Gisborno for years past, tho musical items and gymnastic feats being of the highest morit. The cornel, playing of Herr Yon Mohdcn evoked much enthusiasm. The bellri-iging was also very line. Tho show is full of" fun throughout, humor being created purely with musioand witty actions, and without gag. Tho P.B. Herald gives tho company a Mattering notice, saying it is tho best two hours of mirth and music over presented in Gisborno." M. Faille-res, Minister for Justice in Franco, has at length taken stops to ensure the curtailment of what is called platrago of wines, or tho mixing of chemicals with them to givo a fictitious body. The discharge from the Bankruptcy ! Court of T. M. Humphreys, solicitor, was : applied for at Auckland yesterday, but was opposed on the ground that tho debtor had been guilty of misconduct. Tho ground of the opposition appeared to be an alleged exorbitant bill of costs rendered by Humphreys to a client named Meyer. Mr Justice Conolly, however, granted the discharge. Ho said that the debtor had shown gross misconduct in rendering such a bill of costs, but to suspend his discharge on that account would bo a step which for many years no single Judge had taken upon himself, the matter having always been referred to the Court of Appeal. Whatever his opinion on the bill of costs might be he did not think that was a matter be shoutd deal with in considering an application in ! bankruptcy for the discharge of a debtor.

The strike is now quite over. In Sydney it has been officially declared " off" by tho Labor Council, though in Melbourne the Strike Committee still keep up the friction. The meetings of the latter bod', aro very

lively gatherings. The leaders (Messrs Hancock. Murphy, and Trenwith) committed themselves to two experiments to supply work to tho strikers. These were a wood* chopping station on the G-oulburn, and co-operative brick-making at Brunswick. They are both disastrous failures so far. The trades are now realising how badly tho strike was managed, aud the trio mentioned are abused on all sides. Mr Champion also has again assumed the aggressive, and loses no opportunity of railing at the three. Altogether they are having a very troublesome time. The Chief Justico appears to have ceased his weekly contribution of £10.

The following curious and useful piece of "-formation is taken from Truth :—" A few days ago I waa standing- by an American gentleman, when I expressed a wish to know which point was the north. He at once pulled out his watch, looked at it, and pointed to tho north. I asked him whether ho had a compass attached to his watch. ' All watches,' he replied, ' aro compasses.' Then he explained to ma how this was. Point tho hour band to the sun, and the south is exactly half-way between tho hour and the figure XII. on the watch. For instance, suppose that it is 4 o'clock. Point tbo hand indicating four to the sun, and IT. on tbe watch is exactly south. Supposo that it is 8 o'clock, point the hand indicating S to tho sun and tho figure X. ou the watch is due south. My American friend was quite surprised that I did not know this. Thinking that very possibly I was ignorant of a thing that every one else knew, and happening to meet Mr Stanley, I asked that eminent traveller whether he was aware of this simple mode of discovering the points of tbe compass ? He said that he had neve, heard of it. I presume, therefore, that the world is in the same state of ignorance. Amalfi is proud of having been tho homo of the inventor of the compass. Ido not know what town boasts of my American friend as a citizen."

"Civis," in the Otago Witness, writes : — " An interesting ' message from tho sea ' is s<-!tt me by a correspondent. It is a square oi Ji'n cardboard, partly printed, partly pencil \--:-ift«n, with a -valuable autograph at. tho boa .n, and it was picked up on the coa?t near Oiago Heads. Though here and there defaced by the action of the waves tho words inscribed can be made out. They run thus: '. . . Steamship Company of New Zeal . . . Limited. Wine Card. Required, 2 small Reisling, 1 soda water. J. L. Toon-. Sept. 20/90. 4s 6d.' Touching memento of a great man gone from our shores whom it is likely wo shall never see again ! I shall certainly find a placo for it in my album of autographs, or else (happy thought !) send it to the auction room to be sold as a literary curio. I have no doubt there are people in Dunedin who v.-nild treasure J. L. Toole's wine card, tho.-.-h they might despise an Elzovir classic, aud wouldn't care a dump to possess the original MS. of ' Paradise Lost.' What chiefly impresses me is tho thought that the great comedian in his travels ticatters on the bosom of the deep memorials of himself in tho shape of a record of his moderate, and, no doubt, strictiy necessary potations, confident that wherever they turn up they are certain to bo valued by somebody for his sake. It is a beautiful reflection that perhaps the whole coast line from the Bluff to Auckland is sown with tbe wine cards of J. L. Toole."
