A serious strike of dock laborers has taken place tit Tilbury docks, the men demanding the expulsion of three non-Unionists. ■' - The strike among the Cardiff dockers has virtually been settled. .■ ;'. ■. .• At a meeting of the St. James's Hall Standing Conciliation Oemmittee, it was proposed to disoourage the emigration of men to Australia during the strikes'there/. At the funeral of Cardinal Newman the Right Reverend Mr Stonar represented the Pope, and Prince Doria represented tho laity of Italy. Among those present were the Dukes of Norfolk and Newcastle, Lords Coleridge, Enily, Talbot, and Kerr, and many of tho Anglican slergy. Enormous crowds lined the streets as the cortege passed through. . August 20. A sailor from Calcutta, who is suffering from Asiatic cholera, has arrived in London. It is reported. that peace has been arranged between San Salvador and Guatemala. . . '•'■' Tho brickmakers of New York are boycotting the works employing non-Unionist laborers. The masters have arranged to i stop supplying, and in consequence the New I York, Brooklyn, and Jersey City building ■ traae, which gives employment to 80,000 men, is paralysed. . Later. The news that peace had been arranged between Guatemala and San Salvador is confirmed. The Government of the Argentine Bepublic issue sixty million dollars worth of notes redeemable in five years. Sydney, August; 20. There is little excitement oyer the strike of tho maritime bodies, and the wharves continue to be deserted. Contrary to expectations the difficulty has extended to the Union Steamship Company of New Zealand, aud the wharf laborers engaged in unloading tha s.s. "Waihora to-day were stopped by the defence committee of the Soamen's Union, who ordered work to cease. The crew then proceeded to discharge the ship, but they also were ordered to diecontinue. Work was, however allowed to proceed on the captain representing that it was illegal to interfere with tho work of a crew shipped under New Zealand articles. The wharf laborers are appointing pickets. - The ocean going steamers are not affected by the present difficulty. A large number of non-union mon are offering their services in working tho wharves and ships. It is stated that tho members of the Butohers', Bakers', and Grocers' Unions have been forbidden to supply stores to vessels manned by non-union officers and crews. The carters and draymen are ceasing worir.
