Newspapbh "men occasionally get "good laughs out of their own mistakes. In our cables yesterday occurred the following :— ." Olaf Trigvasspn Whangaroa Thursday., Island Savage Arrived Here Adelaide Sailed' E. K. Wood Zealand Newcastle Sailed StiKilka Wanganui Three Cheers Grecian Bend Auckland." Now if ever a message was plain that one looked it. It was simply a list of shipping, though what puzzled us time was the extravagance of the sender in recklessly spending threepence by adding " here" to .Savage arrived. It now turns out that sandwiched in between the ships we should have announced "The Rev. Mr Savage, who was reported to have been murdered by the natives :at Debeer, New Guinea, has arrived here." After all the Prese Association was not reoklesa in the' expenditure of threepence; lon the contrary, it seems as if a threepenny bit had been saved somewhere, for at that additional cost the message could have been made dear.. The fauit .with many of the message's is that they are stupidly mixed. Only the other day there were several interesting items about the revolution in Brazil; then the Chamber of Deputies, we were told, had 'been dissolved. This" followed on the defeat of the French Government over the match monopoly, and, of course, transcribers of Cables remembered that a change of Ministry in France-^— Ministries generally last a little less than a year—was about due, and the cable was so made to read. Since then it is quite evident that the Chamber that whs dissolved was the Brazilian one.'" The messages in reference to Stanley were more amusing still, for in Napier three independent adcounts were published, all made from the same words, and dealing with a country where text books aro useless, for most of the places named were not even to be found on a map specially compiled in the early part of this "year. > i
