GATHERING OF OLD COLLEGE CHUMS.

CHBiSTontTBCH, This day.

Last evening twenty-threo old Nelson College boys met at dinner at Warner's Commercial Hotel. Mr W. Acton Adams, barrister, and an old pupil of tho College, was in the chair. Nine sent regrets at their inability to be present. Tho toast of the " Old School" was drunk with great enthusiasm. A very pleasant evening was spent, and a strong wish was expressed that tho gathering should be annual.

ILL-TREATMENT OF A BOY,

Gisbokne, This day.

This morning a woman named Harriet Mary Ann Hearn was sentenced to three

months' imprisonment for ill-treating her b_y, Leslie Hearn, aged seven. Tho evidence showed continual ill-treatment, and on one occasion a stout riding whip was broken over the boy, who received an ugly out on the forehead. Tho boy was adopted by the accused. His parents were named Prince, lato of New Plymouth, l»ut both aro dead.
