"HIPPO" ON OTHER MATTERS THAN HOUSE.

Last Thursday evening there was a very warm debate iii our Borough Council, in which some of our City Fathers got rather excited, and some of the expressions mado use of were more noticeable for the strength of feeling than for any compliments they conveyed. -I was glad to see that His Worship had adopted my suggestions, and had got a i're,-h platform on which to rest his chair in place of the wooden blocks used at the previous meeting. It was luelcie his chair was so well supported, otherwise His Worship might havo got floored. During the heat of the debate Cr. Fitzßoy several times essayed to pour oil on the troubled waters, but to all appearance there was too strong an undercurrent running for the oil to have any effect until the tempest had worn itself "out. A few more such burlesques and our Council Chamber will be crowded ou every meeting night, as there is no fee charged for admittance. The lon_- spell of dry weather, and tho strong winds we have* lately experienced, have been the means of turning our ordinary green paddocks quite brown, and the feed is commencing to get scarce. Our farmers are now busy thrashirg, and all tho machines are kept going long hours every dity. Tho crops all round havo been better this year than on any former occasion, and have been all well saved. All tho grain crops are turning out very well, tho grain being clean, bright, and sound. Tho grassseed crop has not turned out quite so well, although heavy yields havo been obtained in some places. Most of the paddocks have been smothered in goose grass, and thore is very little clean seed. Amongst other crops. I have noticed in a paddock on the road between Taradale and Omahu a small crop of American buck-wheat. _ This is, I think, a. new crop for this district.
