Perhaps one of the saddest sights in the world (says a Homo paper) is the ceremony of a lovely young girl taking the veil and burying herself alive in a convent. There lately died in Baltimore a nun of the name of Agnes Gubert, who, according to Rubenstein's testimony, possessed the richest _ and most wonderful voice e7er known within the memory of man. The operatic impresBario Sirakosch offered her in his time £10,000 for a six months' concert tour, which she, however, refused, in order to take the veil and bury herself andthe enormous fortune which was in her voioe within the gloomy walls of a convent.

He seems to skip about pretty smartly, considering tho nature of the country ! One day he's in Russia and the next in Austria, and meanwhile he's been in Roumania and Moldavia, and now he's going to Germany and at tho same time is returning to Bulgaria! A twopenny postman's nothing to him ! Ton forget that the part of Europe he's been knocking about in is uncommonly backward ! There are no nowspapers or other means of circulating correct intelligence! Hum—and veracity is not looked upon as a cardinal virtue, is it ? Quite the contrary ! Nobody tells the truth except by accident!"
