WAIPAWA.

fFBOM OTO OWN OOBKESPONDBNT.I October 15. A couple of meetings have already been hold at Danevirke regarding the expectant goldfield'at Pohangina, the result being tho formation of a Prospecting Association, and already the directors are advertising by a written placard the first call of 5s per share, and for a suitable man as prospector. Proposals wero mado to one man at the extraordinary salary of 20s per week and two full shares! Of course this is absolute nonsense, for if anyone accepted and found gold he would take the balance of his pay out of his find, instead of rovcaling its whereabouts. Everybody thore seoms to havo quartz on the brain, and tho field : might havo been already found in an adjoining paddock by tho iuflated - style in which somo of them talk about it. Woodvillo too has a gold fever on, hut thoy aro quieter and more cunning about it. Thoy too havo formed a simuar association and aro seeking- prospectors, but thero is little trace of tho feeling in tho local paper, beyond the fact that thoy havo engaged Messrs George and Walkor, two experienced minors, to visit tho placo and report. Out of the twenty-five unemployed you sent down to Woodville, only eight remain, either tho balauco havo got absorbed, or thoy have slithered in search of fresh fields and pastures now, aud the opinion in the locality is that the bulk wero unfit and did not care for work. The town looked very busy, and in a healthy state commercially. The cougregation attending the Methodist Free Church are going to erect a.handsotno and commodious parsonage 33 by 42 foot with verandah in front and contain: ing eight rooms. Mr Bickerton, of tho Abcrcorn Arms, showed me tho plans for the now theatre, &c, which he is about to croct on tho adjoining section to the hotel in Voijel-street. The elevation bliows a handsome front 36 feet high, rusticated and ornamented by a number of columns of tho dorio order of architecture. It will bo two stories high, two shops in front, with wide entrance hall in tho centre Tho building will have •14 feet frontngo to Vogel-strcet; the shops will bo 14 feet by 18 feet, with largo plate-glass windows and commodious sittingrooms with fire-place to oach. The entraneo hall, in which is a ticket offico and staircase, loads into tho theatre which will bo 60 by 42 feetiu tho clear, and is calculated to seat 500 people. The stage will bo 40 feet deep and 24 feet in tho opening of the proscenium, and half circular front. Tho orchestra will be sunk so as to afford an unimpeded viow. At the roar of tho stage will bo four good-sized dressing rooms, and thero will be extra doors opening outward for exit in caso of firo. Upstairs will be a commodious 'lodge-room; '42 by 21 feet, with anto-room and fitted with oupboards, &c. a s thoro aro several Friendly Societies in tho town this building will supply a much-needed want, as at present thoro is no public hall of any kind, and hitherto all meetings havo been hold iv the school-room for want of such a place. Tho architect is Mr E. Larcon, of Palmerston. Mr Bickerton has also lately increased liis hotel accommodation very largely, and his premises arc as largo as any between Wellington and Napier. I am glad to say also that he gets a full share of the travelling trade. On tho day I was at "Woodvillo tho Governor was expected to visit tho city, and all its resources in the way of bunting was put in requisition, but as I had businoss elsowhere I was unable to remain to assist in his wolcomo. Very few men appeared to bo at work on therailway cuttings as I passed to Tahoraito. Captain Russell's retrenchment motion has surely not taken effect already. At Waipawa, ono Neil Campbell, of Hnmpderi, was charged before A. St. O. Inglis, Esq., J.P., with being drunk and : incapable. It transpired that ho was found - lying on tho plains in an helpless condition, i and the police had to fetch him in to take j enro of him. He was fined ss, costs 2s, and 1 cab-hiro Bs, which ho gladly paid and ' cleared off home, 1 G. A. Preece, Esq., R.M., held his usual ' field-day at Ormondvillo yesterday, every - moment being oopupied with business from i the arrival of the train from Napier till it i

returned from Tahoraite, when a crowd ran '~ out to catch it. The cases dealt with -were \ as follows:—Gribblc v. Fortensen, claim * £10 lis 2d, which sum with 4s costs was , '> ordered to he paid at 40s per month.— £[ Mullinger and Brett, railway contractors, t' v. : Armstrong, claim £6 19s. Mr Morrison .>$ for plaintiff and Mr Loughnan for defence. : * Judgment for £1 18 with 16b costs, solidtor's foe 10s Gd.—MoGreevy v. Robinson, <■' claim £6 16s sd. Mr Loughnan for plain- r * tiff, obtained judgment for amount with 19s Gd costs, solicitor's feo 21s, to be paid at £2 month.—Carlsen v. MuLinger and Brett, a re-hearing of a claim for £33 9s 3d for work done. Mr Loughnan for plaintiff and Mr'Morrison for defendant. Ater considerable evidence, on both aideß had been board judgment \vas reserved. — Several other cases were settled out of Court.
