ANTECEDENTS OF CAREY'S MURDERER.
11l formation concerning the antecedents of O'Dotincll, (lie 7iiurderer of James Carey, liiiH Loon supplied to the Oelgnng papers (the South Australian Register says) by Will. D'Orsay Ogdcii, (ho coinediiui. Mr Ogdon, who is himself a native of the Southern States of America, says that lie know O'Donnell intimately (luring- (ho insurrectionary war in Hint country. That at that time O'Doiinell was a Lieutenant in the Confederate army, and served in the Provost - Marshal's department under General Winder in Richmond, Virginia. He was a man of undoubted courage, _ and of lax principles; the latter, ho thinks, were occasioned more from his dissipated habits and love of drink than from any inherent viciousness. After the war lie ■went to Texas, where lie fell lower and lower, until at length he found companionship amongst the guerillas and bushwhackers—the horse ami cattle lifters tli.it infested that portion of the country. O'Donnell afterwards made his way to New York, a man of desperate, fortunes, and there joined the Fenian organisation, entering into the spirit of the cause with all the impulsiveness and fervor of his Hibernian nature. While serving in the nriny he was generally in hot water with hi.s brother officers. ]\fr Ogdon was a lieutenant-colonel in a Virginia cavalry regiment when he made CTbonneH's acquaintance. Ho assured us that, from his knowledge of the Eeiiian organisation, he has not a shadow of a doubt (hat its emissaries will within twelve months take the lives of* all the informers who g.ivc evidence against their fellows in the late trial ; that O'Donnoll Is not a man who would commit a murder steathily or feel any remorse at taking a life in such a cause; on the contrary, ho would glory in the sanguinaiy act and boast of his intention to commit the crime before perpetrating the deed. He woidd look upon it first as a duty to observe his oath, and as an act of high patriotism to become the avenger.
