g i The suit of Cox against Eayscr, brought against the Superintendent of the House of Correction for damages in cutting off the plaintiff's whiskers, the plaintiff' having been a prisoner, Avas ordered for a re-trial at Rutland recently. This case is achieving notoriety, having been already tried by two juries, avlio returned heavy verdicts for the plaintiff. Cox Avas fined for selling liquor, and Avas committed till tho fine should bo paid. By law he had twenty-four hours to pay tlic fine; if not paid then, imprisonment followed. Cox declared he Avould not pay, and agreed to Avaivc his privilege of Avaiting twenty-four hours before his imprisonment should begin. The first ceremony Avith a committed prisoner is tonKorial. CoxTiad a heavy red beard of some do/en years' growth, and Avhen he suav the barber's chair he changed his mind, and Avantcd till next day to raise the money and pay up. The sub-keeper, in avlio.sc hands he Avas, told him it Avas too late, pushed him into the chair, and had him shaved dry Avithout first cutting' the beard Avith shears. Next day Cox took cold, aud came rather near dying. The doctors swore it was caused by tho shaving. _ The Judges held that theofliccrs had no right to shave him till the tAventy-four hours Avcroup, and both juries gave liini rousing big verdicts ; hut eiich time there avms some informality in tho trial, an,d uoav tho poor felloAv has got to go it OA'or again. — Springfield Republican.
