AUCKLAND.
December 22. The City Council yesterday night raised the Mayor's salary from £250 to £400. The Town Clerk's salary was increased to £500, and the Engineer's to £600. Six hundred bushmen arrived hare yesterday for the holidays. The celebrated Northern chief Tierau died at Kaipara yesterday. He waa a great warrior of oldea time, and a friend of the Europeane. The tangi will be the largest that has been held in the North for years. Owing to fresh evidence obtained respecting the charge of wilful murder against Priestley and Mrs Hamilton the case is not expected to be gone into at the Police Court until after the holidays. At Mr Buckland's wool sale yesterday greasy wool advanced fd per lb. Mr Rayner, of Blenheim, who was present, was a large buyer.
