NAPIER HIGH SCHOOL.

The first meeting of the newly-ap-pointed Board of Governors of the High School was held yesterday afternoon. Present—Revs. I). Sidey and De Berdt Hovell, and Messrs H. S. Tiffen, J. Auderson, Buchanan, Dillon, F. Sutton, arid M. R. Miller. Mr J. D. Orroond was appointed chairman, and the Rev. D. Sidey bon. secretary and trea?arer. Mr Tiffen as treasurer of the old Napier School Trust Fund, stated that after paying all outstanding accounts there was a balance in band of £43, with further rents accruing at the end of tbe present month. It was decided to request Mr Lyndon to audit the accounts.

On the motion of Mr Sutton, seconded by Mr Anderson, it was resolved " That the School Commissioners be requested to appropriate, for the purposes of the JNapier High School, the funds now in tbeir hands for the advancement of secondary education in tbe Hawke's Bay district."

The present attendance at the High School was stated to be 50, and the arrangements for carrying on the school were as follows:—Rev. Mr Campbell, head master, with a salary of £60 a year and the school fees of eight guineas for each scholar, Mr Campbell paying the salary of the second master ; tbe third master receiving £100 a year from the Board.

It was agreed that for the present the school be continued on the same basis as heretofore.

The following motions were then paeFed :-r- ---(].) "That Messrs Ormond, Sidey, Buchanan, and Tiffen be appointed a committee to obtain plans and specifications for a Girls' Hi<?h School building at Napier, such plans and specifications to be laid before a general meeting of the Board in the middle of February."

(2.) " That the Board considers it of great importance that the present High School should be inspected at as early a date as possible, and requests the chairman to communicate with the Government with the object of inspecting the school, and conferring with the Board as to its organisation, and as to the establishment of a Girls' High School at Napier." (3.) " That application bemado to the Government to authorise the sale of the parcel land ia Tennyson-street, Napier, described in the second schedule of the Napier High School Act, formerly used as a girls' school, with the view of devoting the proceeds to assisting the erection of premises for a Girls' High School at Napier." (4.) " That it appeare the 10,000 acres granted as an endowment for the Napier High Schoolp, and described in schedule 3 of the Act, is not at present producing a reasonable rental or sufficient to be of material assistance in providing for the maintenance of the proposed schools, and thnt the Government be applied to to cause the two blocks to be leased under the Waste Lands Act, provided the value of the land is estimated to be such as will return a yearly rental of not less than £600 per annum. If no such rental is obtainable then tbe Government be asked to allow the land to be put up for sale at Biich upset price as the Waste Lands Board may advise, provided that the total value of the 10,000 acres shall be not less than £12,000, as such an amount invested as provided by tbe Act would yield a revenue which would eDable the Board to carry on its functions." The rernaing business was possessed of no public interest.
