NAPIER ROWING CLUB TRIAL FOURS.

The annual trial fours of the Napier Rowing Club took place on the upper course of the Tutaekuri river on Saturday. On account of the difficulty of getting to the course (an arm of the river which has lately broken out having to be crossed) very few were present, except those actually engaged in the contest. The following crews were entered : — No. I.—Vautier bow, Cato 2, Gibbons 3, Westenra stroke. No 2.— (J. Tylee bow, Anderson 2, i Parker 3, F. Kennedy stroke. No. 3.—Rich bow, Gilpin 2, St. Hill 3, C. Kennedy stroke. No. 4.—Cato bow, Hunter 2, Hanna 3, Gracie stroke. It was decided that Westenra's crew should first try conclusions with F. Kennedy's,and then C.Kennedy's with Grade's, the winners to pull the final heat, but on account of one of No. 2 crew not turning up Westenra was declared the winner of the first heat without having to pull. Grade's (No. 4) and C. Kennedy's (No. 3) crews then pulled their heat, and a very exciting race ensued, Gracie's crew winning by a nose. Kennedy's crew got a very bad start on account of the tide setting the boat into the bank, so that whett " go " was cried the Btroke side had their paddles against the bank, and when properly started were a length and a half behind. This distance was gradually decreased, till when the winning post was reached there was a difference of hardly two feet. The final heat was then pulled between No. 1 and 4 crews, Gracie's crew being at a disadvantage in having to pull fresh men. A very good start was made, but Westenra's boat gradually forged ahead, and came in an easy winner by two lengths. The winning crew pulled in very good style, and evidently had a good deal of practice together. The prizes were four handsome cups presented by the club.
