HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

The committee of the Horticultural Society met on Saturday, at which there were present Messrs Tiffen, Margoliouth, Sturm, Gilberd, Burness, Reynolds, Burton, and Chipping. The following balance-sheet was presented : — Receipts —To surplus and balance, lato show, £50 38 7d ; ditto in treasurer's hands, £1 10s; ditto with Mr H. S. Expenditure- Band, £2 ; stamps, 12a 6d ; refreshments, breakages, &c.,~£l 10s; printing and advertising (Telegraph),£ll; ditto (Herald), £12; books 8s; Gillespie, £2; labor, £5 10s; gas, £1 Os 6d; cartage, £1; Hessian, £10 13s sd; timber, &c, £15; prizes, £27 8s; balance in hand, £6 5s 2d. Assets —Hessian, £10; timber, &c, £10; gas-fittingp, £l 10a; books, &c., £5 ; balance in hand, £6 5s 2d ; unpaid subscriptions, £10. A letter was read from the secretary of the Agricultural and Pastoral Society stating that the committee did not feel justified in paying the £15 voted to the Horticultural Society, on tbe ground that the receipts of the late show were in excess of the expenditure. On the motion of Mr Chipping, seconded by Mr Burness, the sum of£l was awarded amougst the special exhibits. Mr Gilberd proposed that for the future

the word " named " be inserted after those exhibits the committee deem advisable to be named.—Mr Reynolds seconded the motion, which was carried. It was decided, on tbe motion ,'of Mr Chipping, seconded by Mr Reynolds, tbat in future subscribers pay sixpence for each entry, and non-subscribers one shilling. The Secretary was instructed to pay the prizes awarded, and the accounts of the society. It was arranged, on the motion of Mr Chipping, seconded by Mr Burness, that the next show shall be held on the 9th and 10th March. Mr Chipping proposed that in future monthly meetings of the society should be held on the first Friday in each month ; committee meetings to be held afterwards if necessary.—Mr Burness seconded the motion, which was carried. Messrs Chipping, Burton, and Sturm, were appointed to prepare the schedule for next show. The committee then adjourned.
