HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY'S SHOW.

The inaugural show of the re-estab-lished Horticultural Society for Hawke'e Bay opened yesterday afternoon in the pavillion adjoining Mr Tiffen's garden, Tennyson-street, and was very largely patronised, over 500 persons attending during the course of the evening. When •we say that a more suitable and convenient place for holding the show could not be found in town, we feel we are not saying a word too much on that poiot. The arrangement of the exhibits was also excellent, but it is to be regretted there was not a better display. Doubtless the explanation of this disadvantage is to be found in the fact that we have lust been experiencing unusually bad •weather for the season. Any little drawback, however, in respect of the number and quality of exhibits was compensated for by the pleasure one derived in strolling about Mr Tiffen's beautiful grounds and garden, which were kindly thrown open to visitors. The effect in the evening, when the lawn and tent were lighted up, was vary pleasing, and additional charm was lent to the scene by the presence of the Artillery band, which discoursed selections of music in good style. In the show tent there was a really fine collection of roses and annuals. "We also noticed a choice lot of sweet-williame and rhododendrons. Fern?, too, were good, but not numerous. Mr Tifftn showed a magnificent specimen plant of adiantum grucillimum, which was greatly admired ; the plant measures ten feet iv circumference. Mr Ohippinst's bridal bouquet was a perfect picture. "Vegetables and fruit were fairly well represented, the principal contributors being Messrs Ormond, Williams, and Waterhouse, and some of the local market gardeners. Amongst the " extraordinary " exhibits should be mentioned two samples of tobacco grown by Mr E. Bold and an Assam tea-plant raised from seed by Mr Tiffen, showing the adaptability of our climate for the production of both tea and tobacco. The space at disposal precludes our giving a more extended notice of the remaining exhibits deserving of spscial mention, but we append hereto the full prize list: — POT PIANTS.
