The members of the Royal Commission on the South Island trunk railway route have decided to travel over all the rival routes, and to inspect them personally with the utmost thoroughness before takicg any oral evidence on the sixbject. They are now going over the ground in Marlborough and North Canterbury, and on completing their personal ocular examination they will commence taking evidence in Christchurch.
A supplementary Gazette issued yesterday fixes the revised scale of freights on the New Zealand railways to come into force on the Uthprox. The passenger tariffs do not appear as yet to be altered. At the sitting of the Court of Appeal yesterday judgment was reserved in the case of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company v. Patterson and M'Leod, The case of J. Maitland, Commissioner of Crown Lands, Otago, v. D. H. Mervyn was then gone on with, The question involved is whether the Crown has any remedy against a defered payment selector by action for the instalments of the purchase money, and whether forfeiture is not the onJy remedy under" the Land Act of J. 877. The appeal is from the decision
of Mr Justice Williams, giving judgment upholding the demurrer to the first count of the plaintiff's declaration. Mr F. R. Chapman (Dunedin), appeared for the defendant in support of the demurrer, and Mr Hajjgit (with him Mr Stout) for the plaintiff in support of the declaration.
