MELBOURNE RACES.

[by cable.] Melbourne, November 1

There was a very large attendance at Tattersall's last night, and the " ring" appeared in much better spirits than they have been in since the Derby was run. The victory of Assyrian saved them very bad books on the double, as Navigator had been taken very large by the public in doubles with most of the Cup favorites. The startling price of Assyriau was 100 to 3. The colt is owned by Allison, of Adelaide, a theatrical agent, and Barnfield, an Adelaide bookmaker, and they win £8000 by his victory. Jones a stock broker of Ballarat, backed Assyrian to win £2000, and Allen and Joseph, of Melbourne, each laid him in a double with Navigator for £1000 each. There are no very large winners amongst the " ring," and, taking the meeting throughout, the public have had the best of the betting, the ring being hit in eleven out of twelve events. The public were grievously disappointed about the performance of Sweet William, Little Jack, Mistaken, and Sting, all of whom were held in very heavy doubles with Navigator, and appeared so good that very "little was laid off. Iv doubles under £1000 they were also extensively held, but most of the money was laid off by the smail investors as soon as they got one leg in. Nothing has transpired as to the dividends in the totalieators, but they must have been large, nor has any announcement been made as to where the prizes in the big consultations have gone.
