AUCKLAND.
October 23. The Hon. J. Bryce, Native Minister, arrived by the Stella on Saturday. Dr. Goldfbro' made a post mortem examination of the remains of the late Mrs Hedges, who is alleged by her daughter to have been poisoned by her husband, and found the body in a bad state of preservation, most of the important organs being missing. Inspector Thomson and Detectives Strathern and Jones were present, and the contents of the stomach have been forwarded to the local Government analyist, Mr Pond. Tbe body was re-interred on Saturday night. Additional evidence goes to show that the girl has been eccentric and subject to fainting fits, and claimed to see visions. She has run away from home several times. Mr Bell, who lived with Hedges four months, states that Mrs Hedges informed him on one occasion that unless the child got better she would have to be put under restraint. The open boat Madge was struck by a squall on Saturday in the harbor while sailing. She went down instantly. A schooner that was near rescued William Matthews (boatbuilder) add John Scott (plumber). William Cook (shoemaker) was drowned; he was unable to swim, but tbe others could. Matthews had a narrow escape.
