AUCKLAND.

At 10 o'clock this morning a boat containing Laing the chief officer of the British ship Ashmore, and Bobbins, Veigher, and Connor, seamen, left the Queen-street wharf with the intention of going on board that vessel, which was lying in the stream. A stronjj westerly wind was blowing, and before tbe boat had gone three hundred yards from the wharf she capsized, and Robins and Veigher were drowned. Laing and Connor supported themselves on an oar, and were rescued by the ferry steamer Alexandra. When the steamer came on the scene Robins was observed swimming, but sank before he was reached.
The following have been chosen to compose the cricket team for the Southern tour :—Messrs Barton, Blair, Browning, Buckland, P. Dufaur, Gill, Lankham, Mumford, O'Brien, Robinson, Pestro, Wood, R. Wynyard, and Yates.
The American astronomers have selected a site here tor an observatory for the transit of Venus.
The crew of the barque Gazelle, which was recently seized by H. M. Customs for a breach of the Customs laws, have been paid off by the owner. The Customs authorities still have possession of the vessel.
Mr Fallon's tender for the second contract of tbe graving dock for £2900 has been accepted. The engineer's estimate was £5530. The highest tender was £3650.
