COMPLIMENTARY FANCY DRESS BALL.

The fancy dres9 ball for the benefit of the fund for providing a Children's Ward at the Hospital came off last evening in Messrs Banner and Liddle's new wool store at Port Ahuriri, and was in every respect an unqualified success. The commodious dancing room was very tastefully fitted up and decorated for the occasion ; indeed it was difficult to conceive, when one surveyed the transformation that had been wrought in its general appearance by the introduction of gay colored bunting, ferns, &c, that the room was ever intended for any other purpose than that which it was now called upon to serve. Other portions of the buildiag were partitioned off and set apart as dressing and refreshment rooms, and every part was thoroughly lighted up. The floor was, as might be expected, somewhat rough in places, but this fact was apparently but little heeded, everyone seeming fully determined to enjoy the occasion without any reserve whatever. Before midnight there were fully three hundred ladies and gentlemen present, and the scene that presented itself when the floor was occupied was highly picturesque. Some of the dresses were exceedingly pretty, others stylish, while not a few were decidedly unsuited to the wearers. It is to be regretted also that so many of both sexes made the unhappy choice of appearing in plain evening or ordinary dress. Prominent amongst those whose costume furnished an excellent disguise were Mr Balfour, who appeared as King Duncan ; Mrs Spencer, a Sister of Charity ; Mr A. Williams, a Malabar Moullah; Mr Carnell, Doctor Quack ; Mr Jacobs, Day and Night ; Mr W. Bogle, a High-sea Pirate; Mr C. Faulknor, Emperor of China. As a matter of course considerable difference of opinion existed as to which of the many handsomely dressed ladies were entitled to the distinction of belle, so that we shall leave that point an open question. The list of names and costumes appended hereto was compiled for the greater part from the tickets, there being no registry kept, so if it should contain any errors, either of omission or commission, those concerned have only themselves to blame for not exercising due precaution in describing their costumes. There were also a few persons present who " forgot to bring their tickets with them" ; the names of some of these we were able to ascertain, but others will doubtless be missing from the list. One gentleman, whose name did not transpire, appeared as a wool bale, while another represented the "Kidnappers." The following are the names and descriptions of those who appeared in costume: — Mr E. Ashton, Courtier of Ye Ancient Days Mr W. Arrow, Sergt. Napier Artillery Mr Horace Baker, German peasant Mr T.
