October 4. At an inquest on the lad Williams, killed on the tramway on Saturday night, a verdijt of " accidental death " was returned. Mr Gillon, resident surgeon of the hospital, has resigned. The sittings of the Supreme Court were continued yesterday. William Noakes, for a breach of the Arms Act, was convicted and sentenced to twenty - four hours' imprisonment. James Henry Ribbald, charged with larceny from the person, was acquitted. Wm. Rattray, formerly Government clerk, indicated on two charges of embezzlement, failed to surrender, and his bail was entreated. Arrangements are being made by the Surveyor-General for taking observations of the transit of Venus.
