TRAINING NOTES.

BT " SPHINGFIET/D." A letter in your last evening's issue signed "Stiff-un" anent the scratching of Tidal Wave reminds me that your sportiDg readers may wish to hear something of tbe week's doings at Hastings. I do not know who " Stiff-un " is, nor exactly what information he desires, but from his letter 1 should judge he has been backing Tidal Wave and lost bis money, which is not interesting to the general public. I have witnessed some very good work during tbe last few days, but none better than that performed by Virginia Water, Louie, and Kingask, who in company have done some strong two and three-mile gallops, the last-named generally pulling up before tbe last round. Mavis and Mischief have also been treated to faster work, and this morning went one and abalf times rouud the plough at a good pace; of the pair Mischief seemed to have all the best of it. Profitt is in bad luck with. The Squire, disabled by accident in his box I believe, and Foul Play pulled up rather dicky after a strong gallop two mornings ago, but I think Profitt will manage to keep him on his legs till Tuesday, and very likely the Flying Handicap will be his journey; if so, the best of them will have to travel to beat him. Morning Star was improved very much, and will run forward in the Hurdle Race, but tbe Hatred gelding 1 do not like ; he wont bring much grist to Mr McDonald's mill this meeting. Wheeler, with Merlin and Yankee, has been at Hastings since the beginning of the week. The former, although a trifle on the big side, is in good form, and will I expect give a good account of himself in the principal race. Yankee I have no fancy for. Thorpe has Lone Hand and Otupai under his charge at Danvers' stables, both looking well." The little fellow moves along in his old style, but I do not think him fit enough to land any money at this meeting. Lone Hand has in my opinion seen his best day, although even now, if in the humour, he would be dangerous in the Hurdle Race, but he is not of my fancy in that contest, nor do I think he has any chance for the Spring Handicap. Munn's horses are all going well, except Ruahine, who has got a bit of a leg, I hear, which will put out bis chance for the Hurdle • Race. Rangipo, the general favorite for the Guineas, has done some very good gallops this week, and must run a big race for that event, but I fancy there is something else in it that can beat her. All the horses engaged at the meeting have arrived, with the exception of Romeo, and as most of the finishing gallops have been done by the various candidates I will now give your readers

my final selections. t For the Guineas it is bard to tear oneself away from public form as represented by Rangipo, but I must give my vote to Kingask, who will be followed home by fciaugipo and Te Ata. The Hurdle Race I expect will be won by Romeo, if sound and well at the post, with A.G. and Tartar close up. The Spring Handicap will be a very fast and a very interesting race, and I must have condition and class on my side, viz., Virginia Water and Louie. The winner I expect will come from these two, the first-named for choice, and I expect to see Mavis and Merlin run into places. The Maiden Plate will be a good race, and productive of a large field, of which I hope to see Leonara greet the judge's eye first, with Te Ata and Carmen close up. The next item on the card is the Flying Handicap, in which I expect to see Rangipo victorious, the places being filled by Mischief and Foul Play,
