September 19. At 3.30 this morning a fire broke out on the premises of Messrs Park and Anderson, drapers, and quickly spread to the adjoining chop of Mr James Strachan, clothier. The brigade turned out promptly, but before they could get to work the fire had communicated to Messrs Taylor and Towie's stores, and all three" buildiugs aud tbeir heavy

stocks were totally destroyed. The old Bank Hotel adjoining was saved, and the fire extended to the back of the Times office. The shops on the north side were saved by a large party brick wall. The insurance on the buildings of Messrs Park and Anderson and Strachan, which are owned by Captain Sutter are—South British, £500; Imperial, £500; Victoria, £600 ; Colonial, £500. On Messrs Taylor and Bowie's stores, also owned by Captain Sutter—Royal, £250; Victoria, £250; Standard, £250. and Colonial, £350. On the stock —Messrs Park and Anderson, Liverpool LondoD and Globe, £500; Standard, £500; Sun, £500; New Zealand, £500; National, £500; Union, £500; South British, £500; total, £4000. The above estimate their loss at £2000 over the amount of insurance. Messrs Taylor and Bowie's stock is insured in the National for £500 ; Liverpool London and Globe £500, Royal £750, and Victoria £750, total £2500, and they estimate their loss at £1000 over the amount of insurance. Stracban, on stock—National, £750; London and Lancaster, £750; total, £1500. Mr Strachan estimates his lose at £500 over the insurance.

At the criminal sitting of the District Court yesterday there were only two cases for trial. Dennis Hefferman was acquitted of the ebarge of obtaining an insurance policy by fraud from the New Zealand Insurance Company. William M'Grinn was fined 20s for making a false declaration under the Registration of Births Act in stating that one Ann Elizabeth Johnston was his wife, whereas she was not.
