WELLINGTON.

September 19

The comet is distinctly visible here this afternoon close to the sun, and crowds are in the streets witnessing it.

The chairman of the Wellington Harbor Board has received an answer to the letter sent to the Colonial Sugar Refining Company, Sydney, offering the latter inducements to start their worke here. The company state that they have purchased a site for works in Auckland, and hence it is impossible for them to come to Wellington. They add that they were led to the selection of tbe northern city by many considerations, but mainly on account of the facilities offered by an ample supply of fresh water and the cheapness of coals.
