AUCKLAND.

September 1. Henry Griffiths has been killed at Mangapai while jacking a log up a hill.

Sergt. M'Gowan went to Alexandra and examined Tv Tawbiao and Paritapatu, and also the ground where Barlow was fired at. M'Gowen is of opinion that there is no doubt that an assassination was attempted. The natives, on the other hand, declare that it could not be the case, as no one will acknowledge having fired the shots. The examination of Barlow's clothing, however, sustains M'Gowen's opinion. Barlow intends settling down permanently after his recent experience at Mangare.

An inquest was commenced yesterday on the body of Sarah Emily Cleaver (Johnstone), before Dr Goldsbro', Coroner. Superintendent Thomson watched the case for the Crown. The enquiry was adjourned for a week, after the jury had viewed the body, to enable Mr Pond, analytical chemist, to analyse the contents of the stomach of the deceased. Robert Johostone the father of the deceased, aged 76, states that he is perfectly certain his daughter had no intention of committing suicide, and that she has not died through any act of her own. He also states that the Rev. Mr Willis and other residents of Cambridge persuaded his daughter to come to Aucklond and marry.Cleaver which was done against his (Johnstone's) wishes. He could tnrow no light on the affair. Cleaver is a tailor, and is a fine-looking youg man, 25 years of age. He says he caa throw no light on the occurrence.
