If a detailment of sports, holiday making, and juvenile revelry would constitute " news," and delight your readers, I could fill you a couple of columns in less than no time ; but I doubt both premises, and shall not inflict myself upon you.
The nominations received for the two handicaps at the forthcoming race meeting were very numerous), and aftord a pretty good index of the estimation in which sporting men hold our little race meeting. While on this subject I may mention that Mr Aislabie—the energetic secretary —is about to take his departure for " fresh fields and pastures new." Racing interests will suffer considerably, and in many other respects Mr Aislabie's absence will be a loss to our little community.
Dr. Jackson, late of Poverty Bay, has arrived here, and 1 believe intends to practise the healing art among us. A medical man is greatly needed here, but I feel quite convinced no doctor can live on the proceeds of his practice alone. lam glad to say that our district is a singularly healthy one—l beg pardon Dr Jackson —-and unless the medical man holds some other appointment, such as R,M., schoolmaster, or something of that sort, he will not get a large income. I know it is derogatory to this, the noblest of professions, to see a medical man taking outside work, but it cannot be helped in small country districts.
The announcement that the Government has paid money on the Haupapa block, near Hangaroa, in this county, illustrates the fact that not only is the King being dug about, and soon likely to fall, but the former lair of Te Kooti is about to pass from ancestral hands to the British Crown. The Guardian states that the Haupapa was for a long time a secure retreat for Te Kooti and his miscreants.
