POLITICAL NEWS .

[by telegraph.]

(feom our own co-respondent.)

Wellington, September 12,

There is no truth in the rumor that the Opposition will refuse to grant more than three or six months supplies, with the view of forcing an early election and early session. It is considered certain that the supplies will be voted to March 31st as usual, and the House will probably meet in April or early in May. The Towns District Act is likely to be passed without any material amendment, except that Westland, were there i 3 a multiplicity of small towns whose separate independence as constituted local corporations would affoct the prosent county administration, is to be excepted. The next important amendment is that requisitions praying that the Act shall be brought into operation must be signed by one hundred instead of fifty householders. The business of the session having now commenced to narrow down in earnest, and as no good can result from extreme opposition to measures that have yet to be laid before Parliament, it is believed that there ■will be a speedy disposal of the business now

before the FTouee. There will doubtless be very little left undone by Saturday night, and consequently wo may reasonably look forward to a dissolution by Thursday week. The further consideration of the estimates will be entertained this evening, after tho native bills and leasehold qualification clause of the Representation Bill have been served.

The Council will consider the following reason advanced by the Lower House for disagreeing with the amendments of the Pensions Bill: —" The Lower House disagree to the amendments made by the Honorable the Legislative Council in the Pensions Bill, 1881, for the following reason : Beoause the Pensions Bill, 1881, being a money bill, any amendment thereof by the Council is an infringement; of the privileges of the House, and the latter does not deem it necessary to offer any further reason, hoping the above may be sufficient."
