MINING MATTERS.
(iKAHAMSTOWN, Momlay. City ok Lomiov. -Retorting for the City^of Ixnidon Company took place today at the Kurauui battery after nine days' crushing, with a force of 3."> head of stampcrs,but tWo return wa« under the amount anticipated ; and, considering the assistance which had been derived from picked stuff', tlio average was poor. From the picked stuff obtained recently from the No. 4 roof, a return of lHo/. was obtained on Saturday night. The general retorting took place to - day, but the total return, iuclu- , ding that from the specimens, only amounted 3'28o/.. 13dwt. melted gold. The amalgam has not turned out so well a» usual, for, under ordinary circumstances the »ame amalgam would have yielded fully 350oz. However, fur tho time the crushing has been progressing and the mass of stuff available from the same reef, the No. 4, the result is a good payable ono. During the ensuing fortnight there will, in addition to tho (juartz raised from the No. 2 reef, bo a quantity of stuff from the main reef at the bottom level, which will not only increase tho average, but establish the fact of tho payable clasi of tho f|imrtz which is to be denved in the deep levels of this mine. Moanataiari.— The gold lodged by this company on Saturday,' as the result of seven day's crushing, was melted to-day at tho Bank of New Zealand, and reduced to a bar weighing IGOoz. 8dwt.
