ADMIRAL RANDOLPH TO SUCCEED COMMODORE STIRLING. [Reuters Special Telegram to Associated Press.]
London, October 24. The Cardiff Steam Coal Owners' Association has resolved to reduce the price of coal. At a meetine of the London School Board yesterday, Mr. Reed, M.P., withdrew his motion ; and Mr. Picton's amendment was carried by 17 against 6. The Board will consider individually each case in which a child is recommended for gratuitous education. Consols, 92g. Mr. Knatchbull-Hugesson delivered a lectuae at Deal yesterday, on the colonies and their Government by the mother coun try. He insisted strongly upon the necessity for cherishing the connection. The Duke of Argyll, Secretary of State for India, has signified his intention of heartily co-operating with Lord Granville, Foreign Secretary, in the endeavours that are being made for the suppression of the Eastern slave trade. The Rev. George Badger accompanied Bartle Frere to Zanzibar. They intend to start early in November. The newspapers are discussing the letters of Mr. Reed, the late Chief Constructor of the Navy, and comparing the standstill policy of the Admiralty with the rapid ad vance that is being made by Continental Powers. The Bank rate of discount is unchanged.
October 25. It is stated that the San Juan question has been decided in favour of America, and the award declares that the claims of America are in accordance with the Treaty of 1846. The Oalifornian harvest this year promises to be the largest ever known. Money is less active. The Agricultural Bureau report for October shows that the wheat crops are five per cent, increase over the crops of 1871, and the quality has also improved.
October 26. Money still scarce. The stock market is recovering. Victorian sixes, of January and July, 115!. Victorian fives s 106 4. South Australian sixes, 109£. Bank of Australasia shares are quoted at 544. Wallaroo copper, £86 per ton. Other produce unchanged. The first batch of Tasmanian navvies have been despatchd. The steamship 'Atrato' has returned to Plymouth, having broken her shaft. Arrival: 'Lincolnshire,' from Melbourne. An extraordinary horse epidemic has broken out in America. The Attorney. General, in addressing his constituents, ridiculed the idea of a Tory reaction. He defended the Admiralty against the attacks of Mr. Reed, late Chief Constructor to the Navy. He said the colonies were never better affected towards the Mother Country, which would soon become the head of a large flourishing federation. He also spoke warmly on the subject of the American arguments which were advanced at the Geneva Arbitration.
October 28. The Newcastle collieries have reduced the price of coal. Colonel Haws has been appointed aide-de-camp to her' Majesty the Queen. The Staffordshire colliery engineers have commenced to strike. The weather is exceedingly rainy, and disastrous inundations have taken place in the midland counties of England, and in France and Italy. October 29, 5 p.m. Admiral Eandolph is to succeed Commodore Stirling on the Australian station. Large contracts have been made for Australian meats, deliverable in 1873.
