PARLIAMEWTAEY NEWS. MR. GILLIES DEFENDS HIS FINANCIAL STATEMENT. ALL THE ESTIMATES PASSED. [From New Zealand Press Association.] HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. Friday Night. PASSAGE OF THE ESTIMATES.

In the House of Representatives, on the motion to go into Committee of Supply, Mr. Gillies at some length replied to Mr. Vogel's criticism on his Financial Statement when moving the no-confidence motion. Mr. Vogel replied to Mr. Gillies. In committee, nearly the whole of the remaining estimates were passed. The Government promised, on the supplementary estimates, to include a vote to recoup Utago for the expense incurred in leasing Fernhill as a residence for the Governor when it was believed that the session would be held in Dunedin. On the Militia and Volunteer Estimates, Mr. McLean said he saw a way to effect a large reduction in the amount placed upon the estimates. The vote passed on this understanding.

Greville furnishes the following to the Star : — " Mr. Stafford called attention to a paragraph in the Independent relative to the captain of H.M.s. 'Dido.' He said there was no foundation whatever for the statement. Captain Chapman had offered to go and take men for the Government, but it was decided to send the ' Luna' in preference. Mr. McLean acquiesced in the remaiks. — The Municipal Corporation Water Works Bill, Mining Franchise Extension Bill, Auckland Improvement Albert Barracks Bill, and Quartz-crushing Machinery Inspection Bill were passed. — The House went into committee on the estimates on the item of postal. — Mr. Vogol said that he could not promise the subsidy to Melbourne steamers ; but ib was quite possible some arrangement would be made with the Victorian Government for the carriage of letters by Suez. He also promised to enforce a stricter adherence to contract in San Francisco service."
