NATIVE NEWS.

The iiavtkds Bay Herald of the 10th contains an account of the expedition of Messrs. Witty and Hamlin into the Urewera country, in which five Hauhaus were killed and one captured. The facts thus published agree precisely with those which appeared in our issue of Thursday last, so that there is no t necessity to repeat them! The Hawhe's Bay Herald, however, highly commends the conduct of the men engaged in the expeditions, and compares the work done bv Mr. Witty ; s party of 40 men and 10 boys with the failure of the clumsy army led last year by Colonel Whitmore. Mr. Hamlin's success, with a , comparatively, small body of natives, in the Waikaremoanadistriet,is also contrasted with the ruinously expensive and abortive campaign of last year under the Stafford Ministry. > _ The following is new: — "Mr. Hamlin's force is now, we believe; at Onepoto or Waikaremoana Lake/ .where' means hare been provided to endeavour to raise the boats that , we're sunk last year, and upon that work the natives are now engaged; if successful they purpose to cross the Lake and destroy the Hauhau settlements. Whilst they are occupying the attention of the enemy, Major Ropata, with 450 men, is moving from Poverj Bay to the back of the Lake, with the intention oMalling upon their kaingas, from the rear. The main body of the remnant of the Urewera is believed to ; be at Whakaare, a'settlement on the Lake; and although it is*nofr certain, it is believed - Te Kootl is with them! 'A, few days "more, and we may Jlope.for a favourable termroa- , tion to the effort! now bein£made to secure ■• die' future peace of th#'Tsa»t -pong ton- <
