AWHITU HIGHWAY DISTRICT. (FROM A CORRESPONDENT.)

Ok Tuesday, the 29 th February, a meeting of the settlers in the Awhitu district was held at the house of Mr. A. Maetier, in compliance with a notification published in the Prorincial Government Gazette, bringing the Highways Aot into operation in the district. Wiliiam Arrow«mibh, Esq., occupied the chair,' and commenced the business by 'reading the boundaries of ' the amended Awhitu distriot as ' Bet forth in the Provincial Government Gazette, and the Superintendent's letter appointing him chairman of th« first meeting. He then called on the electors present to ohoose five trustees for the present year. The following settlers were then elected: — Messrs. William Arrowsmith, Anthony Maetier, John Irwin, Michael Bowden, James Bracks. Mr. Mactibr then proposed that a rate of one penny per acre be fixed for the present year. This was agreed to without opposition. - The newly-elected trustees then chose Mr. Arrow* smith to aot as their chairman, but resolved to defer the appointment of a collector till a subsequent meeting. • >
