Thb following return shows the state of the Mount Eden 6»ol on Saturday last :— On remand 1 male j awaiting trial before Supreme Court, 6 males, 2 females ; sentenced to penal servitude, 46 males • sentenced to hard labour, 129 males and 5 females : detained for imprisonment, 2 males ; in default of bail, 4 male»,and 2 females j debtors, 11 males and 1 female. Beoeived during the week, 19 males and 6 females ; discharged during the week, 28 males and 6 females. Total in gaol, 200 males and 10 females.— Thomas Young, Acting-gaoler.

We (Wairarapn Mercury) regret to have this week to record the occurrence of a fire at Carfcelton, by which an old resident of that township has loit ail his personal property. •On Monday morning, between the hours of ten and eleven, the house, belonging to Clay.iwas discovered to be on fire. Mrs. Clay was in the adjoining room, and did not know of the fact until informed of it by a child, when on opening the door she found the room full of smoke. She hastened to call her husband, who was burning off some fallen bush at some distance from the house, and on his arrival he found the whole building en* veloped in flames, which was soon after reduced to ftsheg. Everything in the home was consumed, as not a swgle article of furniture or wearing apparel, could be rescued from thfyppoM? . ;
