RELIGIOUS INTELLIGENCE. [From September 1 to September 30.]
The ijfth annna] session of the Diocesan Synod of New Zealand was opened on September 18, by the Bishop of New Zealand, who delivered an inaugural address, noticing first the loss the Church had sustained by the deaths of Archdeacon Kissling, the Rev. Rota Woitoa, and the He y. James Hamlin. His Lordship then spoke of the state of the diocese, the country districts, the native church, &c. The Synod continued, in -session for a> week, during which several subject's of great interest to the Church in New Zealand were discussed. On Sunday, September 23, the Bishop of New .Zealand ordained two native deacons, the Eev. Seth Tarawhiti and the Rev. M. Taupaki, to the office of the ministry." The fii si; mentioned is to be stationed at Tanpiri, Waikato, and the second at the Bay of Islands. < In' ordaining them the Bishop said that he had never, had greater confidence in any candidates than he had in those two natives, as he had watched them through the last five years of their unprecedented- trial, and found them firm and faithful throughout. A Presbyterian place of worship wag opened in. the Maulcu district on September 16, by the Rev. T. Nome. The erection has cost £107, and subscriptions already received amount to £92, leaving a debt upon thebuilding of £15. The Rev. Mr. A mot is. the .appointed minister foe the district. The eighth lecture of a series at the Young Men's Christian Institute was delivered on the evening of September 21, by the Rev. S. Edger. There was a good attendance. > The new Wesleyan Chapel in Pitt-street will be opened on the 14th October. The Rev. J. Warren and , the Rev. J. Buller will preach at the two services. .. • A concert waß given on the evening of September 17, in aid of the fuud.'for completing the uew church of the ...Sisters of Meroy, Mount Sfc. Mary. The concert was under the pabronage of Dr. Pompalliei', Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, and a number of the clergy of .that denomination were present.
