REPORT OF THE FINANCE COMMITTEE.

On Saturday evening, reports were rife in Town, from Taranaki, that seven soldiers, who had strayed from the encampment, had been tomahawked by the insurgent natives, and that others were missing. The news was stated to have oome up by way of Waikato. We cannot give an absolute denial, but can onlj say, that we have failed to trace it up to any authentic source j and that the Government have no accounts of such an event having taken place. Mechanics' Institute.— We learn that Mr. C. Whittle Barry, who, according to the reports of American journals, formerly "trod the boards" in the United States with much effect, has made arrangements for giving "readings" in the Hall of the Mechanics' Institute. He proposes thut the proceeds of one of them— the first, second, or third, as may be chosen, should go to the Taranaki fund, proposing a Macbeth reading, and asking the assistance of the Choral Society to give the Macbeth choruses. The Committee of the Choral met, and immediately came to the conclusion that they had no power to tender the services of the Sooiety, but that they would lend the music for the use of members, who might probably be willing, as individual*, to lend their aid.
