The ship Ashmore, one of Messrs. Willis' line, came into harbour on Wednesday morning, after a good and pleasant passage of 102 clays from the Downs. She leit Gravesend on the 25th, and the Downs on the 27th October ; had a fair wind which carried her well clear of the Channel in 2 days ; experienced light nor-east trades ; crossed the line on the 27th, and the longitude of the Cape on the 57th day. Had light weather till passing Tristan D'Acunha, since which she has experienced strong breezes from the westward. Made Tasmania on the 90th day from the Downs, and sighted the Three Kings on Monday morning. The Ashmore has a full cargo, part of which is for New Plymouth, and 37 passengers. The Oriental, for this port, was to sail 4 days alter the Ashmore. The whaling ship Cortes, of Now Bedford, Captain Charles F. Stetson, came into harbour on Wednesday evening. She is 28 months from home, and has now on board 1700 barrels black oil, 100 barrels sperm, and 10,000 His. whalebone. Her last port was Honolulu, which she left on the 30th October. She came direct to the coast of New Zealand, where she had been for three months, dnring which time she has taken 80 barrels of sperm. Captain Stetson spoke se\eral whaleis which h<ue been already reported. Eight days before his arrival, off Norfolk Island, he spoke the barque Belle, with 300 barrels sperm. He made the harbour from directions received from a brother skipper, not having had any chart on board. The Zingari, steamer, Avith his Excellency the Governor and suite on board, left Wellington on the 28ih ult., and, after calling at Nelson and Taranaki, entered Manukau Heads on the afternoon of Wednesday, coming to an anchor at 6 p.m. Duiing nearly the whole of the voyage from Otago, the weather ha€ been severe, strong winds from the westward ha\ing been almost uniformly experienced. On arriving off the Heads, the wind was fresh from the westward, with a good deal of sea running, notwithstanding which, the pilot bont, which Captain Millton describes as a mere cockleshell, boarded the steamer outside, to the imminent risk, in such a boat and sea, of the pilot and crew. This occurrence, while displaying the anxiety of Capr. Lewis to do his duty, shews, at the same time, the inefficiency of the means at his disposal.
