POLICE RETURNS.

We would direct attention to the returns we this day publish, copied from the Government Gazette, as laid before the Legislative Council, on the motion of Mr. Brown. From the remarks made by the hon. member when movirjg for these returns, we expected to have found that a much larger amount of fines had been inflicted, as it is within our knowledge that the publicans were loudly complaining of the conduct of the constables in giving them every possible annoyance, and in many instances, fines were imposed under circumstances that almost warranted the belief that the sufferers had been entrapped into a breach of the law. If fines are imposed on publicans for supplying constables with drink while on duty, (which we think a good regulation) theirs should also be a corresponding punishment inflicted on the constables themselves for receiving spirits contrary to the ordinance under which they aie appointed.

The New Zealand Company's Otago Puffs. Mr. Earp's last. — " The horses bred at Otago are remarkably hardy, and finely proportioned ; a num. ber of them have been recently sold at Sydney for the use of the E ist India Company. Recent accounts from India announce their arrival there, and they are spoken of by the Indian press in terms of unqualified praise." The above is from that paragon of papers, the hew Zealand Journal of j June sth, 1847. Cur readers will join with us in laughing at this egregious puff, but those at home, who may be silly enough to believe that stations for rearing catlle and horses exist at Otago, will find to their cost, that it is no laughing matter to be thus miserably deceived. Really it is disgraceful for such men as Mr. Aglionby, Mr. Baring, and others of like respectability, to countenance Mr. Earp's false and deceptive paper. We have been politely favored by Lloyd's Agent, W. S. Grahams, Esq., with a copy of WillmerSf Smith* European Times, and though we have not sufficient space for any lengthy extracts, yet we feel bound to copy the following NOTICE TO THE COMMERCIAL PXJBLIC IN ALL PARTS OF THE WORLD.
